reread on april 14, 2017
this book is actually purely perfection. everything from the aspect of grisha to the characters, their chemistry, all the scheming things kaz brekker does, is absolutely flawless. i’ve never actually loved a series as much as the six of crows duology and this knocks everyone out of the ballpark. that’s how much i love this book.
FIVE REASONS CROOKED KINGDOM IS THE BEST BOOK. EVER
#1: leigh bardugo will not hesitate to rip your heart right out.
~ leigh bardugo is absolutely an amazing author because of her horrible antics of making you feel things. she ripped my heart out about- i dunno- five. hundred. times.? do not underestimate her. she will kill you. and you will enjoy it because it CROOKED KINGDOM guys. keep up!
Djel, he was terrible at this. He stumbled on, trying to make her understand. “But I am grateful for that disaster. I needed a catastrophe to shake me from the life I knew. You were an earthquake, a landslide.”
“I,” she said, planting a hand on her hip, “am a delicate flower.”
“You aren’t a flower, you’re every blossom in the wood blooming at once. You are a tidal wave. You’re a stampede. You are overwhelming.”
she can rip yOUR heart out and you’d better be ready for this. because my life is in shambles now. even after knowing that matthias will die. and nina will cry. (omg that rhymes)
#2: changes in perspective are ON. POINT.
if there’s one aspect of storytelling that’s extremely hard to pull off, it’s changing point of views between characters seamlessly. and yet leigh bardugo strikes again and manages it. it’s astonishing because i. can. not. write. a. lick. and yet she can. and she kills me when she does. it’s absolutely amazing and leaves me speechless because every single character point of view switch is on point and accurate and leigh bardguo style FLAWLESS
“Crows remember human faces. They remember the people who feed them, who are kind to them. And the people who wrong them too. They don’t forget. They tell each other who to look after and who to watch out for.”
#3: character relationships
the character’s relationships with each other are absolutely. cry-worthy. * relationship spoilers ahead*
kaz and inej; it’s like an allies-friends-sorta lovers- relationship between these two. kaz is absolutely hopelessly in love with inej, who wouldn’t be. and we don’t see much of inej’s feelings. but it’s obviously they’re in love and they’re both badass kicking characters so they’re a favorite.
wylan and jesper; wylan and jesper are absolutely on of my all time favorites in this book. they’re so cute together, especially with jesper’s flirting with him and wylan always blushing a (begin quote)”daylily pink(end quote). and it’s absolutely, 100% adorable. always. forever.
nina and matthias; nina and matthias never got a proper relationship yet it’s so obvious they were meant to be. i felt like leigh didn’t have to kill matthias] yet it did give nina something she needed to push and move and be the amazing girl she is. it’s just like that.
kuwei and jesper; they only kissed once because kuwei pretended to be jesper. and i don’t know why, but they’re sorta adorable. but not as adorable as wylan and jesper.
“She smiled then, her cheeks red, her cheeks scattered with some kind of dust. It was a smile he thought he might die to earn again.”
#4: twists at every corner
i’m not even lying, leigh bardugo is the queen of twists. whenever you think that something is going to go horribly wrong even though it’s obvious it won’t because it’s KAZ BREKKER’S CREW EVERYONE, you think something is going to happen that is horrible. but being kaz brekker, and being his crew, obviously leigh bardugo prides on tormenting us all with her amazing queenliness in the throne of twists. it’s just not very kind leigh. i just needed two boxes of tissues.
“Has anyone noticed this whole city is looking for us, mad at us, or wants to kill us?”
“So?” said Kaz.
“Well, usually it’s just half the city.”
#5: pure awesomeness
i forgot how to spell awesomeness for a second.
anyways, crooked kingdom is magic. itself. a book. is pure. magic. glitter. an ethereal form of perfection. that was not nice leigh. that was a roller coaster that hurt me emotionally. don’t do it again. please do it again.
“Fear is a phoenix. You can watch it burn a thousand times and still it will return.”
[this quote is currently residing in my instagram bio and before that was a soc quote so feel accomplished, leigh. i only put quotes i love in my bio. and it is in my wattpad one too. what is wrong with me.]
lil’ side note:
i’m probably the only person that likes kuwei more than anyone. what is wrong with me. but he’s single?? but he’s fictional so sigh.
this has to be one of my longest reviews and i’m happy because it’s for a well-deserving author and novel yay
